Anand Beats Leko in Rapid Chess Match
The defending World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand won the annual rapid chess event held from June 2nd until June 7th at the Hungarian city of Miskolc against Hungary top chess player Peter Leko. After 4 days, 2 chess matches a day and 25 minutes per play in every match, 2 wins and 6 draws, Anand defeated Leko, scoring 5 points against the former's 3.
Viswanathan Anand is the latest and strongest guest in the Leko & … chess rapid match, which has been hosting a leading chess champion as a challenger to chess local hero Peter Leko (ranked at the number 9 in FIDE's Top 100 players listing with 2751 rating points). Last year, it was young Magnus Carlsen of Norway (who has been busy the same weekend, defeating Vassily Ivanchuk at the 20th Ciudad de León Masters in Spain), who has gained the same 5-3 score as Anand did this year.
In 2007, it was Russia's top chess player, Vladimir Kramnik, who made a visit to Miskolc and beat the host 4.5-3.5, after 2 wins, 1 loss and 5 draws. A year earlier, Leko had the privilege of playing rapid chess against Anatoly Karpov, who dominated the World Chess Championship from 1975 to 1985, and then again between 1993 and 1996 (as FIDE World Champion), and the pleasure of beating him 4.5-3.5, winning in one game and drawing the rest; a huge leap from Leko's first contester, English chess grandmaster Michael Adams, who was then the number 7 ranked player in the world, while Leko himself was ranked at number 4. Leko & Adams rapid chess match has ended with a 4.0-4.0 draw.
